Biomedical Engineering

Fundamentals

Biomedical Engineering is a highly interdisciplinary field of engineering which integrates engineering principles with math, physical and biological sciences. Biomedical Engineers design, develop, manage, and regulate medical devices and technologies, and work closely alongside healthcare professionals and other engineers. Our students are prepared to embark on careers in medical device and technology companies, engineering firms, research, and professional health sciences.

Students graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering.

More Information

Our faculty

  • partner with local healthcare systems for on-site learning opportunities
  • conduct research funded by National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and industry
  • bring industry experiences to the classroom

Akron Advantage

Hands-on research

Experience biomedical engineering firsthand in facilities that conduct research in:

  • Cancer tissue engineering
  • Cardiac tissue engineering
  • Artificial intelligence and medical imaging
  • Prosthetics and orthotics
  • 3D bioprinting and biofabrication
  • Lung bioengineering
