Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Mallo Family Endowed Scholarship for Green High School

The Mallo Family Endowed Scholarship for Green High School (formerly The Mallo Family Scholarship Fund) was established at The University of Akron in December 2001 by alumni Ted A. Mallo ’67, ’68, ’72 and JoAnn E. Mallo ’67 and last revised in March 2024. The couple created the scholarship to recognize incoming С»ÆƬÊÓƵ students from Green High School who were academic achievers and excelled outside the classroom.

Ted and JoAnn Mallo have a long relationship with the Green Local School District, located in the city of Green, Summit County, Ohio. Ted served for 12 years as a member of the Green Board of Education, including two terms as president, and JoAnn was an elementary school teacher in the system for 20 years. Additionally, the couple’s three children attended and graduated from Green Local Schools. Sons Ted ’86 and Tim ’87 received the Senior Class Manhood Award, and daughter Robin ’90 received the Senior Class Womanhood Award. All three children were high academic achievers, including valedictorian honors for Ted and Tim, and they lettered in multiple sports for multiple years while in high school.

The Mallo family also boasts a long line of graduates from The University of Akron. Both Ted and JoAnn are Zips, as are their three children and numerous extended family members. Prior to his passing in October 2022, Ted had retired from the University as General Counsel Emeritus and Professor of Practice, having always valued the opportunities that higher education and С»ÆƬÊÓƵ provided to him and having instilled that mindset within his own family.
