When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Students who want to apply for scholarships should visit the scholarship page on the Financial Aid site. You can find the link for the online application here.

The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Wise, Robert L. Endowed Scholarship in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the College of Education

The Robert L. Wise Endowed Scholarship in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the College of Education was established by Robert L. Wise in 2007. Mr. Wise grew up in Akron and is a 1951 graduate of The University of Akron’s College of Fine and Applied Arts and the College of Education. He taught art for 33 years in elementary and secondary schools in the Akron Public School system. His last 16 years of teaching were at East High School. Mr. Wise also taught at night at The University of Akron during summer sessions. After retirement he taught for almost 10 years at the International Institute.

In addition to a great appreciation for art, Mr. Wise has a passion for music and endowed a tuba chair with the Akron Symphony Orchestra in the names of Robert L. Wise and Flora M. Bump. Ms. Bump was his teacher and friend.

With his scholarship, Mr. Wise wishes to help students achieve their academic and career goals in the fields of art, music, and education. The recipient will be a non-traditional student with financial need enrolled full time in the College of Fine and Applied Arts or the College of Education. Recipients must have at least a 2.5 GPA. The scholarship shall be awarded each year to no more than two students. Every other year the recipient will be a School of Music student. Otherwise, the recipient will be an art student and/or a student in the College of Education. Decisions will be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
