Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Dudich, Porfero "Porky" Varsity "A" Association Fund

Initially established in 1987, this scholarship fund was permanently endowed by the Varsity "A" Association in September of 1991, in honor of Porfero "Porky" Dudich for his outstanding service to The University of Akron as equipment manager, and later, to merchandise sales done through the Varsity "A" Store which bears his name - Porky's Place.

Initially this fund was used to provide tuition scholarships for a fifth-year student-athlete selected by the Varsity "A" Association. In 2024, the fund was revised to support a naming gift and cover annual operation expenses for the newly established Porky Dudich Varsity "A" Association Strength and Conditioning Center. The fund was previously known as the Varsity "A" Association/Porfero "Porky" Dudich Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The purpose of the fund is to perpetually provide financial resources for the newly established Porky Dudich Varsity "A" Association Strength and Conditioning Center and to honor the life and legacy of Porfero "Porky" Dudich at the University of Akron Athletics Department. The Porfero "Porky'' Dudich Varsity "A" Association Fund supports the annual operating expenses of the center which may include, but are not limited to, the acquisition of new equipment, general maintenance, and any future unforeseen costs necessary to ensure the center remains operational and well-maintained.
