Timoch Family Endowed Award for Beta Rho

The Timoch Family Endowed Award for Beta Rho was established in May 2024 at The University of Akron to honor siblings and fraternity brothers James W. Timoch '91, the late Peter N. Timoch '97, and John H. Timoch '98. The three brothers were active members of Beta Rho, the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) chapter on The University of Akron campus, while pursuing their degrees. Despite being affected by Huntington's disease, a rare congenital illness, the Timoch brothers, along with their parents and sister, Lisa, displayed unwavering optimism and incredible courage to live life to its fullest - while also spreading love and kindness with all who were fortunate to know them. For all three brothers, membership in Beta Rho was vital and remains a defining time of their lives.

James W. Timoch (Butch) was initiated into Beta Rho in November of 1983 as scroll number 822. He was a very dedicated member serving as New Member Educator as well as the Chapter President in 1985. Butch was well known for his love for Songfest (an annual Greek System Song Contest) where Beta Rho often won the best fraternity and combined sorority and fraternity divisions. Butch was a residence hall assistant (RA), on the Yearbook Staff, and participated in many intramural sports teams. After graduation, he worked in pharmaceutical sales for years before becoming a City of Akron firefighter/paramedic and chemical-fire specialist. Butch was a track and field coach and a highly decorated decathlete at numerous World Police and Fire Games.

Peter N. Timoch was initiated into Beta Rho chapter in November of 1986 as scroll number 943. Peter was active in the chapter and a former House Manager. He studied education and was an accomplished martial arts instructor in the Akron area. Peter was a U.S. Karate Team Captain and won the 1992 U.S. Karate Male Athlete of the Year award. He taught self-defense classes at The University of Akron while he was on campus. Pete entered the Chapter Eternal on March 3, 2022.

John H. Timoch was initiated into the Beta Rho Chapter in November of 1993 as scroll 1175. like his brothers, John was active in the chapter holding several offices (Vice President, House Manager, and Sports Chairman) while sharing his talents with TKE and The University of Akron. John was an emergency room nurse at Akron General.

This award was established to help deserving students meet the expenses associated with going to college. It is the strong belief of fraternity alumni that full immersion in Beta Rho life offers numerous benefits, such as fostering lifelong friendships, cultivating leadership abilities, and developing "better men for a better world." The creation of this award was championed by frater Lonnie G. Justice '82, who sought to bring to life the enduring principles of love, charity, and character as demonstrated by the courage, tenacity, and dedication of the Timoch brothers and their extended families.

The Timoch Family Endowed Award for Beta Rho was established as part of We Rise Together, the Campaign for The University of Akron.

Students eligible for The Timoch Family Endowed Award for Beta Rho must:

• Be initiated members of the Beta Rho chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon, enrolled in any College or program at The University of Akron.
• Be in good standing with the University and the fraternity;
• Have a GPA of 2.6 or higher; and
• Submit a personal statement about the award's importance to their academic pursuits.

Each spring, the Beta Rho Board of Advisors will forward the names and personal statements of TKEs who are eligible for the award to the University Scholarship Committee in the Office of Student Financial Aid (USC). From this list, USC will make the final selection (based on eligibility requirements) and allocate award amounts. Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, or otherwise designated to alleviate financial barriers associated with attending college. Recipients shall receive the full award amount which will first be applied to the recipient's student account, covering (in preferential order) the cost of tuition, fees, books, and meal plans. All remaining funds will then be disbursed directly to the student. Funds used for expenses other than qualified educational expenses are reportable and may be taxable to the recipient. The award may be renewed for recipients who reapply and continue to meet all criteria.
