Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Scholarship for Akron Baseball Student-Athletes

The Scholarship for Akron Baseball Student-Athletes was established in 2019 by Gary W. Kendron and Barbara R. Bishop. Gary graduated from the University in 1972 after a rewarding and enriching Akron experience.  Barb, a graduate of Malone University, has long been a huge fan of Zips Athletics. Gary and Barb have supported the University for many years in various ways, including as ardent season ticket holders for the football and men’s basketball programs. They love baseball and were excited at the announcement of baseball’s return to campus for the 2020 season. They are pleased to invest in the success of baseball student-athletes through this scholarship.

The Scholarship for Akron Baseball Student-Athletes will be awarded to student-athlete members of the University of Akron baseball team. The funds will be used at the discretion of the baseball head coach to provide scholarship support for one or more baseball athletes, until otherwise noted. Recipients, who may be incoming freshmen or current team members, must represent Akron Baseball in an exemplary manner on campus and in the community. Recipients must possess characteristics of leadership, hard work, and dedication, both on the field and in the classroom. Annual selection will be made by the baseball coaching staff in conjunction with the athletics department. A report will be provided annually to the donors on selected recipients.
