Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Olsen, Arthur and Louise Student Investment Planning Competition

The Arthur and Louise Olsen Student Financial Planning Competition was established in 2004 by Bonnie Janelle in memory of her parents as a tribute to their collaboration as a couple in astute and sound investment planning practices. It is Mrs. Janelle’s desire to honor her parents in such a way that assists students in their academic pursuits through tuition assistance as they demonstrate creative yet practical applications of their knowledge in the area of investment planning.

The Arthur and Louise Olsen Student Investment Planning Competition is open to undergraduate students at The University of Akron who have completed the investments course (6400:343 or the equivalent). Students will be asked to analyze a case study (which will vary from year to year) and develop, based on the facts presented in the case study, a sound investment plan. Students will prepare an Investment Policy Statement and corresponding investment portfolio based on the case study. The student’s IPS and portfolio will be judged by a jury panel of investment and financial planning professionals representing the Department of Finance Advisory Board, with the winner(s) announced at the annual Department of Finance luncheon, held each April. The winner(s) will receive a tuition credit to be applied the following semester.
