Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Beyer, Dr. Kimberly A. and Delores S. Beyer Scholarship in Education

The Dr. Kimberly A. Beyer and Delores S. Beyer Scholarship in Education was established in 2012 by Dr. William (Bill) H. Beyer '52, retired associate vice president of business and finance and professor emeritus (math sciences) for The University of Akron, in honor of his daughter, Dr. Kimberly A. Beyer, and his is wife, Delores S. Beyer.

Bill and Delores were married on September 6, 1959, in Akron, Ohio, and moved to Blacksburg, Va. Bill completed his Ph.D. in statistics at Virginia Tech while serving as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics. In 1961, Bill accepted a position in С»ÆƬÊÓƵ’s Department of Mathematics, commencing a relationship with the University that has spanned more than 50 years. The couple has three children - Randall, Kimberly, and Kevin - all of whom earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from The University of Akron.

Through this scholarship, Bill wishes to recognize his daughter, Kimberly, who serves С»ÆƬÊÓƵ’s Division of Student Affairs as Director of Communications and Strategic Planning and Executive Assistant for the Vice President, as well as assisting the Chief of Staff in the Office of the President. She also holds adjunct faculty status in the College of Education, where she teaches graduate courses. Previously, Kimberly worked for more than 20 years in С»ÆƬÊÓƵ's Career Center, serving as Interim Director for eight years. Prior to joining The University of Akron, she worked  in Career Services at Ball State University. A three-time University of Akron graduate, Kimberly holds a doctorate of education in higher education administration, a master of arts in counseling-student personnel services, and a bachelor of arts in psychology. She credits the University with providing numerous opportunities for her to make a difference in the lives of students, especially as she guides them to realize their full potential - personally and professionally.

Delores has been a strong advocate of education and is especially grateful and proud of her husband's successes and her children's professional opportunities. She remains an active member of Beth El Synagogue and is past president of both Beth El Sisterhood and the Akron Chapter of Hadassah. Delores volunteered or more than 25 years in numerous civic and community organizations, including The University of Akron, and continues to be a member of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ's Women's Club. Volunteerism has taken a back seat now in favor of her other hobbies, including gourmet cooking, reading, traveling, attending plays and movies, and most of all, enjoying her three grandchildren - Riley, Cara, and Ava - whom she adores.

The Dr. Kimberly A. Beyer and Delores S. Beyer Scholarship in Education was established to support full-time graduate students with disabilities registered with the Office of Accessibility and enrolled in the College of Education at The University of Akron. The College of Education Dean's Office, in collaboration with the Office of Accessibility and the Office of  Student Financial Aid, will select recipients.
