Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of С»ÆƬÊÓƵ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Whitmer, Marnie Endowed Student Scholarship

The Marnie Whitmer Endowed Student Scholarship, formerly The Marnie Whitmer Turnaround Student Scholarship, was originally established in April 2000 by Marnie E. Whitmer and revised in December 2022. The scholarship was established to support students who, through the course of high school, develop an appreciation for the importance of education. As a result, hardworking individuals are inspired and have personal motivation to equip themselves with a college education to better pursue their life goals.

The Marnie Whitmer Endowed Student Scholarship is to be awarded annually to an incoming freshman or current University of Akron student from North High School in Akron, Ohio who plans to study full-time at the University and demonstrates financial need and/or merit. The scholarship is renewable for four years and may be used for tuition, books, and fees provided the student maintains a minimum 2.5 grade point average. The recipient is to be a North High School graduate, or in the absence of a suitable applicant, a graduate from any Akron Public Schools High School. Selection of recipients is made by the Office of Student Financial Aid.
