С»ÆƬÊÓƵ Dance Company performing April 4-5 at Thomas Hall

03/20/2013

Contemporary ballet, modern dance, surrealist art and elements of hip-hop are on the program when The University of Akron Dance Company presents its Spring 2013 "Dance Destination Akron" concert on April 4-5 at 8 p.m. in С»ÆƬÊÓƵ's E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, 198 Hill St.

Among the choreographers is Tom Evert, co-artistic director of Cleveland-based DANCEVERT.

Evert's contemporary dance work Geometry In Motion explores the idea of "sacred geometry" in which the world, in all its complex beauty, is comprised of the same simple geometric patterns.

Also featured are works choreographed by С»ÆƬÊÓƵ dance faculty members Kara Stewart, Robin Prichard and Cydney Spohn. Stewart has choreographed a contemporary ballet piece inspired by a poem that reveals the fears of life and the challenges that come with those fears. Prichard's modern dance work takes the audience into the surrealist world influenced by artists who set the rules and redefined them. Rounding out the concert  is Spohn's "Variations," which combines contemporary ballet with influences of modern dance and hip-hop.

The dancers are students from the С»ÆƬÊÓƵ Dance Program, along with students from the С»ÆƬÊÓƵ Dance Institute's pre-professional dance program for children ages 3-18.

Available in advance and at the door, tickets are $14 for general admission, $12 for seniors and С»ÆƬÊÓƵ faculty, staff and alumni, and $7 for students. Visit the Thomas Hall Ticket Office or call 330-972-7570.
