Temporary Medical Conditions
A temporary medical condition (TMC) typically describes conditions in which the student expects to recover in one semester or less. TMCs are often sports-related injuries, upcoming surgeries, high-risk pregnancies, etc. While the University is not obligated to provide students with temporary medical conditions an accommodation, as a courtesy and where feasible, the Office of Accessibility will attempt to provide services to students who experience temporary illness or injury that will allow the student to access the physical campus and the educational curriculum. Students inquiring about such services should contact the Office of Accessibility at (330) 972-7928 (v) or access@uakron.edu.
When should someone with a TMC register with the Office of Accessibility?
Students should start the as soon as possible after the incident occurs. In addition to starting the registration process, students should immediately contact their instructors. The Office of Accessibility provides a fail-safe for students experiencing temporary medical conditions, however, it is often more efficient for a student to work directly with their instructors when possible.
If a student has an upcoming, scheduled surgery and anticipates a need for accommodations, they should contact their instructors and begin the registration process with the Office of Accessibility as soon as they have a confirmed surgery date.
What is the registration process for a student with a TMC?
The registration process for students experiencing TMCs is exactly the same as those students needing permanent accommodations. The only difference is that students with TMCs should also get in contact with their instructors to determine if their instructors are able to provide support. The registration process for the Office of Accessibility can be found here: .
What kind of documentation is needed from students with TMCs?
Just like students applying for permanent accommodations, students with TMCs should provide us any documentation they have that speaks to diagnosis and the impacts of that diagnosis in the academic environment. For any student, the Office of Accessibility always encourages use of our documentation guidelines to help ensure the student provides the information we need. Documentation guidelines, including one for TMCs, can be found here: .
Are there transportation services available for students with TMCs?
There are a number of parking lots on campus with accessible parking. For the complete list of these parking lots and accessible parking spaces visit the Lot List on Parking Services website.
To determine eligibility for a temporary parking permit, students with temporary medical conditions should complete the "Application for Temporary University Disability Permit" form located on Parking Services website. A licensed physician or chiropractor must sign the form and also provide a prescription that contains the following information:
- Name of person with disability
- Indicate you are applying for a temporary university disability permit
- How long the disability is expected to last, no greater than six months
- The physician/chiropractor must sign and date the prescription
- The physician/chiropractor must specify an ending date on the prescription or the application will be rejected
If the disability is long-term, ask your doctor if you qualify to receive a disability parking permit from the state.
